resubmit! crossing my fingers. My most recent tattoo that pays homage to the masterpiece novel by Sweden’s own John A. Lindqvist. In my tattoo, Oskar and Eli are both holding hands. Blood is running down Eli’s hands, and onto Oskar’s. The blood drips off both of their hands on down my leg where is reaches my foot and has Let The Right One In written in blood. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Let The Right One In, it’s a 2004 horror novel turned into a 2008 horror film. It’s about a young boy, Oskar, who is ruthlessly tormented by his classmates and he’s completely alone. He often fantasizes about revenge and he’s intrigued by murder. Basically, he’s a pretty messed up kid. He soon forms a friendship with an equally messed up young girl, Eli. She just moved next door and she only comes out at night. Coinciding with her arrival in the neighborhood there are a series of inexplicable murders around town. As Oskar becomes more aware of what Eli is, he also sees her for who she is and he cannot forsake her. And in his most critical moment of need, Eli defends Oskar the only way she can. I have never been so moved by a book/film in my whole life. I remember hearing of this incredible Swedish horror movie and watching it thinking I was going to be in for the fright of my life. As it turns out, I ended up crying. I was practically sobbing the entire time. This movie is beautiful, it is a masterpiece. After watching the film, I read the book and I fell even deeper in love. I later found out there was an American version (Let Me In) to my beloved LTROI so I watched that, too. Both films are spectacular in their own way, but I hold Let The Right One In closest to my heart. LTROI it isn’t really a horror movie to me. It isn’t scary, or horrific in the cliche ways that you would think. The things that horrify me the most are what Oskar endures day in and day out, the brutal bullying. The fact that Eli is condemned to live the life of a child, forever. But her innocence in gone entirely because of what she is. I find nothing but beauty in this film. It doesn’t scare me.  I think something that really stuck out to me about this story was how badly the two characters need each other. Oskar being so alone and Eli being so broken and full of sadness. They found each other and though it isn’t conventional, it works. It’s almost inspiring…as if in a way saying, “someone doesn’t have to be perfect in order to be just what you need.” I also think there’s a lesson for all of us here somewhere. Don’t judge people. Let the right one in, but don’t judge people until you fully know them and understand them. You can’t judge someone’s past until you walk their journey. There’s a critical scene in the film where Oskar is almost a bit disgusted with Eli. He doesn’t quite understand why she does what she does. Eli simply replies to him, “Oskar, be me, for a little while.” He takes it in, processes it for a bit, and he then accepts her. He knows what she is, but he also sees WHO she is, and that’s so important. It’s something I think we can all relate to that in some way. We all have things we aren’t proud of, and it’s hard to share them with people. But, the right people will understand, and they will accept you :) So, that’s it. That is my love affair with a Swedish masterpiece. Most people don’t get it, and some people never will. But that’s it. I am so proud of this tattoo. I am so head over heels in love with this story, and with these characters.
