I bought this tattoo for my fiance for his 28th birthday. Its from the cover of In Flames album Sounds of a Playground Fading. Anders, the front man for the band said this about the album;
“I tried to play around with words a little bit and see what works, and what album titles were striking. I wanted to make people think a little bit. I was watching documentaries and reading about the world in general, and there is a huge part of the planet that is still untouched by man, still innocent. The world around us isn’t going to live forever, so we need to stop thinking like we are. Then I was thinking, ‘What if we only had a few years left? Would that change the way we view things? What kind of issues would that raise? What would we do to defend the earth, our friends and loved ones?’ That’s pretty much the overall theme of the album.”
This statement is why my fiance got the tattoo.

Calvin and Hobbes is a huge part of my life. I remember bugging my parents to no end, asking if they would buy me some Calvin and Hobbes books I saw in those Scholastic order forms every kid would be sent home with in elementary school. Luckily my folks gave in, and the humor I found in those pages made me a fan forever.
Of course, the satirical side of Bill Watterson’s writing didn’t hit me right away. I really began noticing it in high school, and found I was touched by much of what I could now understand. Around that time my aunt and baby cousin were killed by a drunk driver. There were two things I sought solace in during that time: music, and Calvin and Hobbes.
And one particular Sunday strip hit me hardest and has never left me. It’s the one where Calvin and Hobbes come across a dead bird and ponder the delicacy of life, and how the carelessness of others often causes the most damage. Calvin ends the strip by saying, “I suppose it will all make sense when we grow up.”
As a child, that strip never connected with me. As a teenager, it hit home. As a grown up, I’m still asking when some things will make sense.
This Calvin and Hobbes tattoo was done on my right forearm by Levi Hatch of Think Ink Tattoos in Norman, Okla.
