This is my first tattoo, done by the lovely Kai Smart @ Chimera Tattoo in Santa Cruz! The inspiration behind this piece comes from Ernst Haeckel and his book Kunstformen der Natur. The very first time I was showed this book by my best friend, I flipped through it and when I saw this Siphonophorae (what my tat is) I knew instantly that it would be my tattoo. I think I even said it out loud…. I really love Haeckel because he is the perfect cross section of art and science. This piece is a reminder that what I have always thought of as the gap between art and science, is really  non-existent, it all just depends on perspective.
