This is my favorite of my tattoos. It means a lot to me. Ian White did this in 2011 (back then at Black 13 Tattoo in Nashville - he currently has his own studio in Nashville).
This is based off of a Robert Frost poem - “Design”. The tattoo is the scene described in the poem: “I found a dimpled spider, fat and white, [>] On a white heal-all, holding up a moth […]”. The poem talks about how you come across certain things in nature that are so chaotic and almost fatefully organized, that it’s hard to deny believing in God. I consider myself agnostic, but faithful and spiritual. The poem represents a lot about how I feel about faith, not religion. Sometimes I feel or see things that just make me feel like I can’t deny the existence of something more. I’m not a fan of organized religion or its institution, but I was never happy attempting atheism, either. I’m not sure how I’d describe myself to really explain my feelings on the matter, but I feel like my tattoo does it well enough for me.
