I wanted something a little different from the things I had seen anyone else get, which is why I settled on this particular color, size and a single word. This tattoo holds two meanings- one of which is emotional, and the other is much more literal.
I’ve been a fan of Andrew McMahon for 9 years (through Something Corporate and Jacks Mannequin), and the song “Swim” by Jacks Mannequin is the single embodiment and representation of every song of his that has helped me through life. From being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder almost a decade ago, to depression and now to my current battles with cancer in my family, Andrew’s music reminds me to stay strong and keep fighting every single day- even when it feels impossible. Music has kept me going through life, and without the music of Andrew McMahon, I really don’t know where I would be today.
My childhood was spent in the water almost entirely. Most of my memories are spending each summer with my sister at the community pool at our local park. Every day she took me to swim, and she would let me stay as long as I liked. My parents would save up enough money to drive an hour or two to a neighboring city- so we could stay in a new hotel and I could go swimming in the pool.
It almost felt ironic when I decided to get this tattoo, because the word meant two very different things in my life, but both are equally as important to me.
