I got this tattoo done in the Summer of 2009. This is a pic day-of.
The turtle is a memorial tattoo for my grandmother, who passed away suddenly in May of 2007 at age 67. My grandmother was a huge part of my life growing up. I lived across the street from her until I was seventeen years old. She was like a third parent, and was always there to take care of me and my older brother. She had such a beautiful soul and it was such a shock when she died. She had a borderline obsession with sea turtles and tortoises. Her house was decorated with paintings, photos, and little turtle figures, so naturally the symbol to commemorate her would be a sea turtle. I also wanted to have the sun in her shell, so that I can remember my grandmother’s everlasting warm and brilliant presence in my life. The turtle peeks out of the top of almost every shirt I wear, so she is a constant conversation piece and a constant reminder of my grandma’s positive influence.
It was my second of now three tattoos. I got it done by Taler at Mom’s Body Shop in San Francisco (who was awesome and I would recommend to anyone looking to get inked in SF).
